Congratulations to Killeen ISD Police Officer Cary Spate, who received the esteemed 2026 State of Texas Law Enforcement Achievement Award for Valor!

Officer Spate was presented with the prestigious state recognition Friday, June 26, at the Texas State Capitol in Austin by The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).

The honor highlighted Officer Spate’s heroic efforts at the Killeen Mall on Dec. 21, 2024, when she, without hesitation, rushed into a dangerous situation and took action, rendering aid to injured bystanders after a suspect rammed a truck through the entrance to JCPenney’s as holiday shoppers ran for their lives.

Thank you, Officer Spate!

Killeen ISD Announces Three New Campus Principals Killeen Independent School District on Monday announced the selection of three new campus principals for the 2026-2027 school year, continuing the district's commitment to placing strong leaders where they can have the greatest impact on students, staff and school communities. The appointments reflect a strategic focus on student achievement, experienced instructional leaders, and strong partnerships with families. Each leader brings a proven record of helping students succeed, developing teachers and building positive campus cultures. "When we place great leaders in our schools, we're investing directly in student success," Deputy Superintendent Dr. Donald Stewart said. "Our principals set the tone for learning, relationships and opportunity. These selections reflect our commitment to making sure every student has the support, encouragement and high expectations they deserve to reach their full potential." Genevive Manning has been named the next principal of Liberty Hill Middle School. Manning brings more than 25 years of experience in education and a leadership style centered on collaboration, trust, instructional excellence and meaningful relationships that strengthen outcomes for students and staff. She most recently served as assistant principal at Killeen High School, where she partnered with staff and community stakeholders to strengthen school culture, improve campus systems and support student achievement. Over more than two decades in education, she has served as a teacher and instructional leader in Killeen ISD, San Antonio ISD and North East ISD, building expertise in instructional improvement, professional learning communities and bilingual education programs while supporting students and educators across Texas, California and New Mexico. Manning holds a master's degree in educational administration from Lamar University. Following the retirement announcement of Sharita Herrera, Killeen ISD names Donald Bosier as the next principal of Gateway Academic Complex. Bosier also brings more than 25 years of experience in education and a proven record of transformational leadership. He most recently served as principal of a disciplinary alternative education program in Round Rock ISD, where he led efforts to improve student outcomes through restorative practices, strengthened campus systems and built partnerships supporting student success. Throughout his career, he has served as a principal, assistant principal, teacher leader and instructional interventionist, developing expertise in campus transformation, student support services, instructional leadership and organizational improvement. His accomplishments include being named the 2025 Texas Association of Black School Educators Principal of the Year, and the 2026 Round Rock ISD Secondary Principal of the Year. Bosier holds a master's degree in education administration from Concordia University. Killeen ISD has named Felecia Ware-Johnson as the next principal of Richard E. Cavazos Elementary School. She replaces Ronald Sursa, who is moving into a director role for Specialized Learning role with the district. Ware-Johnson brings more than 17 years of experience in education, including leadership experience in elementary instruction, campus operations and teacher development. She most recently served as assistant principal at Maude Moore Wood Elementary School, where she helped strengthen campus systems, supported instructional improvement and worked closely with staff and families to promote student success. During her career in Killeen ISD, Ware-Johnson has served as an instructional specialist, curriculum instructional specialist and elementary classroom teacher. Her experience includes leading professional learning, supporting curriculum implementation, coordinating campus-wide testing and helping teachers strengthen classroom instruction through coaching and collaboration. Ware-Johnson holds a Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Texas at Arlington, a Master of Business Administration from Texas A&M University-Central Texas. ###
#CelebratingExcellence: Killeen ISD is proud to be featured in the June/July 2026 issue of TASB's Texas Lone Star magazine for the inspiring work of Reeces Creek Elementary, Future Teachers Club!
The program connects fifth-grade students with Education & Training students from the Killeen Career Center, giving younger students an early look at careers in education while building leadership, communication and empathy through meaningful mentorship.
"My teachers always show respect and kindness to me," said fifth-grader Edith Cruz. "I want to do the same thing and make kids feel happy and comfortable."

Harmony poured into the Killeen High School hallways this week during the KISD Fine Arts middle school and high school band camps. While metronomes kept time in small group breakout sessions and on the main stage, the students kept learning as they navigated their notes and played their instruments.

To conclude the week, instructors at the camp said there are two opportunities to hear the sweet sound of hard work with ensemble performances at 6 p.m. Thursday and band performances at 6 p.m. Friday, both in the KHS auditorium. #WeAreKISD
